When it comes to the handle of the Okuma Ceymar, the central core of the handle is made from strong forged aluminum, and the grips on the handle are made from EVA. This combination produces a strong yet comfortable handle to use.

Sizing

The Okuma Ceymar comes in many different sizes and strengths.  They are designed for different kinds of fishing, and ultimately different kinds of fish.

Sizing ranges from a low size/strength of C10 to a bigger size and more strength C65.

• C10: This is the smallest Ceymar, and is ultimately built for 2-6 lb test line. This is a great option for fishing species such as small perch, crappie, smaller trout, and sunfish. This reel would be great if paired with an ultralight rod.
• C30/C40: These rods are great for species like Bass, steelhead, carp, and more of the midsize fish that are fighters. The C30 works great when paired with 6-8 ln line and the C40 works well when paired with 10-12 lb line. The C30 is a great reel for things like drop shotting and some of those casting moves that require more finesse.
• C55: This reel works great with striped bass, redfish, snook, and many others. It is great for inshore saltwater fishing. This works great with 15lb monofilament line, but many anglers have used 20-30lb braided line on this reel and have had great success and function with that.
• C65: Pier and big water fishing is what this reel is best for. This reel was specifically designed for deeper saltwater areas, but with its oversized handle for more reeling power it can be used in freshwater for larger species as well as those big catfish.

Weight

The weight of this reel ultimately depends on which model you choose. From the C10 at ½ lb to the C65 that comes in at 1.5 lbs this reel is lightweight for what it does.

When you compare the strength and durability of this reel to its weight and then compare that to other reels, this one is right up there with some of the big names in terms of strength per ounce.

Selecting a Reel

Bearings/Gear Ratio

When it comes to bearings and gear ratios, a good rule of thumb is that the more/higher it is/has then the smoother the reel will operate.

If the reel has around 7 bearings then you can bet it will operate smoothly. There are two kinds of bearings the ball bearings and the roller bearings, typically most reels have more ball than roller bearings.

As far as the gear ratio, I like to shoot for 5.0:1 and above. The gear ratio essentially means that for every 1 turn of the handle the spool turns “x” amount of times. For a 5.0:1 ration that means for every 1 turn of the handle the spool turns 5 times. The higher the ratio the quicker and easier it will be to reel fish in.

Drag

When it comes to drag it is important to know what system is on the reel and then what drag even is, then finally how to adjust it.

There are two basic drag systems. One is the disc drag and the other is the click and pawl system. Most reels utilize the disc drag set up, so for this reason we will stick with talking about it.

The Okuma Ceymar uses the disc drag system.

Essentially, drag exists on a fishing reel to “pump the brakes” on the fish and apply back pressure to it, and not allow the reel to turn as easily. This puts some pressure on the fish and gives it something to fight without you reeling. Ultimately the purpose of drag is to wear the fish out, then you reel. It does a great job of this.

Weight

The lighter the reel the less heavy duty it is in general. Lighter reels should be used for smaller fish, as mentioened above in the sizing section.

The good thing about choosing  a lightweight reel and pairing it with a medium to light weight rod means your shoulder won’t be sore by the end of the day because you care casting around a heavy rod/reel combo.

Yes, the Ceymar is a left and right hand retrieve reel. You can easily swap the handle out and move it to whichever side you want to use it on.

Is Okuma a good brand?

Absolutely, the company has been around since 1986, and they produce a variety of fishing gear. Their reels as mentioned above are great reels for a middle of the road type of reel. These aren’t the high dollar competition reels, nor are they the cheapo ones that come on the rods from Walmart.

On the opposite side of the handle is a knob, turn the knob to loosen the connection of the handle. Once this loosens you should be able to collapse the handle down. This is the function of most fishing reels, and is fairly simply in operation.

Remember, righty tighty and lefty loosey, so turn the knob to the left and it should loosen the connection between it and the handle and allow you to collapse the handle on the Okuma Ceymar.

The C65 is the better option because it is heavier duty and designed for fishing the larger fish that the ocean produces as opposed to lakes and streams.

All the reels are built with corrosion resistant material though, which helps to protect against the harsh air around salt water, so in those terms, all of the Okuma Reels are great for the atmosphere around salt water, but for actually fishing the heavier fish in the salt water the C65 is the best option.
